About the BIS Standards Club


BIS STANDARDS CLUB – 3963b

The Bureau of Indian Standards is the National Standards Body of India under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. It is established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 which came into effect on 12 October 2017.

BIS is known to set standards for consumable products. Standards are the basic product requirements that are to be met and certification is thereby provided by BIS in order to ensure the safety of its use in consumer’s day to day life.

It has been providing traceable and tangible benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports substitute; control over proliferation of varieties etc. through standardization, certification and testing.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is lighting up the future of India with a visionary initiative - the creation of Standards Clubs in schools and colleges across the nation. This innovative endeavour aims to instil in young minds the paramount importance of quality, standards, and generating scientific temperament.


Objectives of the BIS Standards Club:

  • The standard clubs are being established with an objective to sensitize young members of society about the importance of standards in improving quality of life.
  • Club activities assist students to cultivate a sense of unity and working with others in reaching the same goals.
  • 3. Students develop social skills: Clubs facilitate students to meet, mix, and work together with other students from different backgrounds in a diverse environment.

Activities under the Standards Club:

The Standards Club may carry out a variety of student-centric activities aimed at providing them opportunities for learning on the themes of Quality and Standardization. Such activities may be undertaken within the Institution or outside as stand-alone programmes or as part of other programmes of the Institutions such as Annual Day, School / College Fair, Exhibitions, Teachers’ Day, etc.

  • The Mentors should organize regular and adequate number of meetings of the Standards Clubs for imparting knowledge to the Student Members about Standardization, Quality and the structure and content of standards.
  • Each Standards Club in institutions other than Engineering Institutions should organize at least three programmes in an academic year on the following themes:
    • Awareness Programmes - Seminars and Workshops on Quality and Standards related subjects and their role in the upliftment of quality of life and economic development.
    • Competitions such as Quiz, Essay-writing, Debate etc. on Quality and Standards ecosystem
    • Competition on writing Standards

BIS Supports to Standards Club:

1.General Support - BIS would provide the following support:

  • Share details of the BIS official nominated to liaise with the Standards Club.
  • o Organize initial orientation training for the Mentor at Branch level in physical or virtual mode, as deemed useful.
  • o Coordinate with the Club for the design and execution of its various activities.
  • o Provide audio-visual and other materials, as deemed necessary, for activities of the Clubs.
  • o Invite and involve members of Standards Clubs in special programmes organized by BIS.
  • o The Educational Institutions may also avail the facility of BIS Mobile Science Vans as and when the activities under Standards clubs are undertaken.

2.Financial Support

  • The financial support for Standards Clubs in Engineering Institutions would be limited to a maximum amount of Rs 100,000/- per year, subject to the condition that at least two activities must be organized every year.
  • o The financial support for Standards Clubs in institutions other than Engineering Institutions would be limited to Rs 10,000/- maximum, for each of the three activities in a year for each Standards Clubs.
  • o High and higher secondary eligible Government Schools with Standards Clubs are entitled to receive a one-time Laboratory Grant to a maximum of Rs. 50,000/- in the form of state of the art lab equipment for upgrading their Science Labs.

MTNC Standards Club - 3963:

Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College has collaborated with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to conduct activities with an aim to raise the bar of quality standards among the College Students i.e Nurturing ambassadors of Standards and Quality. The Bureau of Indian Standards has devised a ‘Standard’s Club’ at Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College for the awareness and the vocalisation of the importance of standards in our life.

Date of creation of Standards Club: 20.11.2022

The Standards Club at Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College (BIS SC – 3963) was inaugurated on 23rd December 2022 by Mrs. Hemalatha Panicker, Scientist – D / Joint Director, Bureau of Indian Standards, Madurai Branch Office, Government of India in presence of Er. S.Rajagopal, President; Mr. M.Vijayaragavan, Secretary and Dr. S.Venkateswaran, Principal I/c, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College.

The activities were co-ordinated by the Mentor, Mr. P V GOPIMANIVANNAN and Standards Promotion Officer, Mr. SivaKumar, Bureau of Indian Standards, Madurai Branch Office, Government of India. Initially 65 students have enrolled as Member and the events are conducted through the 6 membered core committee.

The BIS SC – 3963 is enrolled with 124 students at present (2023 - 2024).
